Jimmy Stewart is a 31 year veteran of television weather in Tucson, including 10 years at KOLD-TV and 21 years at KVOA-TV. Jimmy graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Atmospheric Physics (Meteorology) from the University of Arizona. He also holds the Seal of Approval from the American Meteorological Society. He started his radio career in Ann Arbor, MI, then moved up to the larger markets of Des Moines, Minneapolis/St. Paul and Washington, D.C.

Jimmy moved to Tucson in 1980 and became the first morning talk show host for KNST Radio. Later that year the General Manager of KOLD-TV called Jimmy one day to ask if he had any knowledge and/or interest in weather, as they were looking for a new weekend weatherman. He told him he did not, and the GM said “You’re qualified…let’s talk”. Shortly after he started doing television weather, Jimmy quit his radio job and went back to school to acquire his meteorology degree. Even before graduating, he took over the main afternoon & evening weather job. He was the first, and for many years, the only degreed meteorologist on Tucson television.

In 1990 Jimmy moved over to KVOA-TV, first as the morning & noon meteorologist…then as Chief Meteorologist, forecasting for the afternoon & evening news broadcasts. Jimmy retired from television weather forecasting in May of 2011. He feels very fortunate that he was able to spend his entire television career in Tucson, a city and area that he loves.

Since retirement, Jimmy has been taking his Weather Bus from school to school. Jimmy Stewart’s Weather Bus is a mobile classroom used to teach the science of weather to school children in Southeastern Arizona, with a goal of inspiring the pursuit of science.
